Babe Ruth is a name which is instantly familiar to people around the world; even those who are not baseball fans and those far too young to actually remember the Sultan of Swat know his name and are familiar with the House That Ruth Built. Among younger Major League players, one of Babe’s superstitions has taken hold. As Babe said “whenever I hit a home run, I always make sure I touch all four bases”. Babe Ruth was larger than life in every sense of the word and he remains deeply rooted in the popular imagination – for there may be another like him.
George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in 1895 in Baltimore, MD, the son of George H. Ruth Sr. and Kate Schamberger-Ruth. One of two surviving children of eight (the other was his sister Mamie), Babe Ruth has a tough childhood, often being left to care for himself. At the tender age of seven, he was sent to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, which he recalls more as a reformatory than a school. Deprived of parental guidance except on occasions, Ruth quickly earned a reputation among the nuns at the school as an incorrigible.
The Babe never like rules, especially regimented rules and was not good at adapting to what was correct-he had his own way, a uniqueness that would follow him to baseball. Perhaps the biggest thing Ruth learned to love at St. Mary’s would be his fondness for children; as an adult, he was charitably involved with them as much as he could be. George Jr. shined with talent at a young age and played numerous positions at St. Mary’s, often, however, he excelled in catching and pitching. When Babe reached nineteen, Jack Dunn, the manager and owner of the then Baltimore Orioles which was a Boston Red Sox minor league team, was awed at Babe’s talent and signed him right away. Once Jack signed him, he was dubbed by his teammates as “Jack’s newest babe.” From then on, he would be forever known as simply “Babe.”
With the Orioles for only five months, the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract and at 19, he both pitched and played the outfield for six years. During this period, fans took note of Babe’s performance on and off the field, with his off the field stories being more colorful through his eating and drinking all-night parties that included many women. Playing in his first World Series Game in 1916, he set a record that still stands today, a fourteen inning game that became the longest in the history of the World Series. His pitching skills at this time left him an astounding record of 29 2/3 scoreless innings in World Series bouts alone, a record that stood for forty-three years. In December of 1919, a weird trade of sorts would land him with the Yankees-leaving the Red Sox in a World Series denial until 2004!
He would begin his career as a Yankee in 1920; with Ruth, the Yankees would go on to win 7 American League Pennants and a staggering 4 World Series. In 1920 alone, Ruth hit 54 home runs. Babe was no less popular with fans in New York than he had been in Boston, both for his skills as a player and for his candor. In 1923, the Yankees built the (now former) Yankee Stadium, which would come to be called The House That Ruth Built. Ruth hit a home run on the very first day Yankee stadium was open – as well as helping to secure another World Series title for the Yankees. In 1914, he had married Helen Woodford. Thanks to his success in baseball, he was able to purchase a country home in 1919 and the couple adopted a daughter, Dorothy. The two separated (but did not divorce) in 1925 – at the time, Ruth was involved with the model Claire Hodgson. When Helen Woodford passed away in 1929, Ruth married Hodgson and dedicated an out of the park home run he hit in his first at bat in April of that year.
Ruth’s 60 home runs in 1927 are another long standing record the player set – it would stand until Roger Maris’ 61 home runs in 1961. Many fans debate the vailidity of Maris’ record, being that it took Maris 182 games against Ruth’s 154. However, no one will debate Ruth’s .690 batting average, which has no equal to date. It wasn’t for nothing, after all that he is remembered as The Sultan Of Swat.
Babe’s famous moment in baseball came in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series where the Yankees played the Chicago Cubs. In the 5th inning, after he already had one home run, Babe came to bat and was at a count of two balls and two strikes. Before the next pitch came his way, Babe pointed to the center of the field bleachers and slammed that puppy right where he pointed and some believe it is the longest home run ever hit out of Wrigley Field.
Ruth left the Yankees in 1935 – he had wanted to be manager of the team and he decided to leave rather than stay in another capacity. He instead signed on with the Boston Braves as first base coach and player, with the promise of the manager’s chair in the following year. Seeing that the Braves were unlikely to keep this promise, Ruth went out in style. In one of his final games, Ruth hit three home runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates for a career total of 714 home runs. The Babe’s 2,211 RBIs, 2.28 career ERA as a left-handed pitcher and his 8,399 at-bats along with all of his many achievements have made him a player who will always be remembered as long as there is a game called baseball.
June 25th, 2009 - Craft Show Addiction
It?s been quite awhile since I did it. I admit to myself back then that it was a silly hobby, an occupation that really does not deliver rewards. But now I also admit that I was just lying to myself; I was trying to find an excuse to stop devoting time to something that I loved doing, and for what? All of it was in an attempt to give myself more time for a work that I did not really enjoy.
In this day and age, finding something that you love to do and earning money with it is a rare thing. That is why many people just opt to go for jobs that they are capable of doing, even if they borderline detest the tasks that they do. Sometimes, hobbies just don?t pay well. Which is interesting; because in my particular case, earning for what I?m doing is far from being unheard of.
There was a time when I liked to venture into craftsmaking; I am a woodworker, in particular. To me, there?s just something that can be had with the natural beauty of wood. Whenever my muse is around the corner, I find that I can cut, carve, or glue them to whatever shape my mind imagines.
Let’s move on with my story. Up until a few months ago, I preferred the mundanely repetitive task of my job. But then the financial crisis hit. Just to be on the safe side, I began exploring other ways of earning income.
So I went to the Internet, and I discovered that there were literally thousands of craft fairs in our country annually. All I had to do was go to a site that listed all events, apply some filters, and ta-da! I could find the ones in my area. It was then just a matter of choosing the right one.
I have been going to these fairs and festivals for several months now, and I must say that I have mostly enjoyed the experiences that I’ve had. Even if sales are not always good, my experience has been positive overall. And of course, the extra income that comes with it is a nice kicker.

One of the most popular forms of photography is portrait photography. Just about anyone who can point and shoot their camera can be considered portrait photographers. Rapport: The first thing you need to do is build rapport with your subject. Having an interest in your models is definitely a plus. If you show an interest in your subject a comfort level is reached that allows them to be more natural in front of the camera. When the shutter is clicked your chances of getting amazing photos is increased tenfold.
Personality: The best photographs show the viewer a bit of the subject’s personality. This occurs best if you have an insight to the person. You want their personality to shine in the look in their eyes or the set of their mouth. A hint is that their personality will usually come out when they are not expecting a shot to be taken, so you have to be ready to take the picture when the opportunity comes.
Lighting: Natural lighting is the preferred source. However when you want to emphasize the person’s face and character, you will want to think about using artificial lighting. It is important that your light is evenly distributed and that it emphasizes the angles you are looking for. Lighting can have a great effect especially if you are looking for a serious photo.
Background: Most portraits use light backgrounds to highlight the model. Another great idea is to use the environment to add more character to your subject. It is important to make sure that the colors of your background and the dress of your subject complement each other. If you don’t tend to this detail the contrast can become dissonant.
Plan: Make sure your I’s are dotted and your T’s crossed before going into the shoot. Not only is it imperative that you have all the equipment that you need, but it is vital that you are confident that you can handle the job properly. Prepare all the necessary materials and be sure to bring a good topic for conversation so that your subject can relax while you are shooting.
Portrait photography is one of the most satisfying hobbies that I have found. If you’re serious in making it your career, you can be sure that it can be lucrative as long as you perfect your craft. However, remember that you should have the heart for the job because portrait photography’s first requirement is interest.
