January 27th, 2009 - Leigh Steinberg And The Benefits Of Recycling
A blog on LeighSteinberg.org was really interesting to read. It promoted the importance of recycling and how it harkens back to the days of our ancestors. They recycled many items in order to survive with a lot less waste.
We’re now beginning to understand the impact that recycling has on the world in which we live. Fortunately many people here in the US get it. They have recycle bins by the curbside and think twice before they throw certain things into the garbage can, rather than the recycle bin.
I recently participated in a project to recycle cell phones. I cant remember the organization that sponsored this project, but essentially you put used cell phones into a pre-paid mailer and those cell phones get shipped out to the our men and women overseas. This gives them the ability to call home to their loved ones.
I think that this project is a fantastic idea and hope that many more projects like that are sponsored. Its not only good for the environment, but good for the soul. You feel that you’ve at least given some value back to society, while helping save our planet.
The blog on LeighSteinberg.org had plenty of examples of recycling, including how you can turn glass into useful items for tabletops and landscaping decorations. I was reminded of a program that talked about just that idea on a cable TV channel.
Many people don’t realize that there is a $25 Billion industry that takes cars and recycle their parts. This industry is so beneficial to saving our planet, because there is so much waste in unused cars and parts. Every 30 – 60 days, we are bombarded with new technology. Our society is clearly over-saturated with “stuff”. I almost feel that this saturation and breaking point parallels the decline of our country. There’s no way that we can consume all of the latest technologies, such as new computers, monitors, TV, etc. Even ink cartridges have the potential to be a big waste problem, if not recycled properly. How many ink cartridges do you use in a 12 month period? TONS, I’ll bet.
The ink cartridge recycling programs are great examples of smart people doing smart things for our planet. There are many options to recycle, including sending your used cartridges back to the manufacturer, “re-inking” them at the local ink retailer or even “selling” them to the local office supply store for store credit.
Recycling should not be an afterthought for us. It should be part of our responsibility as we hand down this planet to the next generation. Not only is recycling something that is good for our planet, but it can actually save you money. That idea alone is worth the price of admission, especially during this economic downturn.
