November 1st, 2009 - Children’s Behaviour Not Improving? You Can’t Be Doing It Right!!

The heading is hard hitting. Am I saying that if kids’ behaviour isn’t good then you’re not managing them correctly?? Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. In the whole school or in your own classroom if you have behaviour problems and you want to improve the situation but it isn’t happening then you have to change what you’re doing. The good news is that this can easily be done – yes, I mean it!! Any one of you can learn the strategies you need to manage children’s behaviour successfully. You need the skill and the confidence – these enable you to succeed.

If you want to master any skill the process is the same. Find out what you have to do, practise the techniques to become proficient and then go on with the skills to become increasingly confident and a better practitioner. My skills have grown over years – Behaviour Bible tells you about my first days managing children’s very challenging behaviour. Well, managing is the wrong word – it was a disaster!! I hadn’t a clue what I was doing and the kids knew it …. it was awful….. I see so many people in that situation in schools I visit.

I knew that I had to learn to manage the behaviour being presented but there wasn’t anywhere I could learn – no courses. I was on my own and it took me quite a long time to establish what was needed. But, I realised I had to make big changes and build skills that would make me successful. These behaviour management strategies are what I use every day in my classes and I also pass on my knowledge to others in schools and classes – and improvements can be seen in minutes. As soon as you start doing the right thing the children recognise the fact and respond completely differently to you.

During the time I’ve been working with extreme behaviour problems, behaviour in schools has generally worsened. Unfortunately bad behaviour is so prevalent that it’s now likely to be considered normal and there’s no longer shock that it’s happening. It’s practically accepted that this unacceptable behaviour can’t be prevented. I’ve had people just raise their eyebrows in surprise that someone’s suggesting that they could and should be taking action.

Where do you start? Well, you have to decide whether what you’re doing is giving you the results that you want. Usually when I ask someone this question the answer is, ‘No’. In that case I’m afraid that you have to accept that you have to make some changes in your approach to behaviour management. Believe me, when you do this, your life in the classroom becomes massively easier – reduced stress, better results. You can’t lose!!

Behaviour Bible tells you what you need to know about managing potentially difficult behaviour situations and creating a successful and productive classroom. Read, practise and implement.

Liz Marsden is a highly respected behaviour management specialist who manages challenging behaviour believed unmanageable by other teachers and professionals. Liz’s influential book Behaviour Bible offers invaluable information and guidance to help you manage your classroom effectively. October 15th, 2009 - Learning History at Home Schooling

Do you think that spending time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For some people, that is probably true. For instance, a test is due and the pupils are asked to memorize a list of dates and names. However, after taking the test, they will probably forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do every time they have exams. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which concentrates more on the history of the world, will surely interest you more.

Simple memorization is not enough to know the significance of famous people and important events. Through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way – your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the current situation of the world today.

But, if you think that home schooling is the most effective option for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s learning progress by yourself.

Let’s just suppose that your kid is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you can start by simply hanging a map on the wall of your child’s schoolroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could return to history lessons by reading biographies of the different athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child follows. Aside from that, you could also look into the history of that specific sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.

For example, if your child loves baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of drugs and other favourite sports during that period in time. But remember that you can adapt this concept to any interest such as dancing, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current affairs or read interesting historical documents and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use while home schooling, like TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, he/she will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, learning is better when it is done in an interesting way.

These ways are advisable if the child is still young, however when your child is older, you should select a home schooling program that is suitable to his/her particular age group. The programs are pitched at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search the Internet for these different programs. One advantage of these programs is that you can adapt them to fit the interests of your child. However, you have to see to it that all the modules are followed by your child.

After you and your child have decided to try home schooling, you must be prepared to make some changes to your life. The educational environment will now be in your home not at a school and through the various resources that you think best, such as a computer and the Internet.

February 28th, 2009 - Camp Blog

Before you send your child to a summer camp it is a good idea to get a good feeling about a particular camp. Checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog.

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft – it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

Charter into new waters this summer. For many kids, coming to camp is a big adventure! One of the biggest challenges is swimming in a lake. We all have had experience swimming in a nice blue pool. There is security in being able to see the bottom of the pool. Lake swimming is to enter the wild water and to cross a border. You pass the lake?s edge and you break the surface of the water itself. In doing so, you move from one realm into another: a newrealm of freedom, adventure, magic and occasional danger. Watch out for those Turtles and Fish! Swimming in open water is a newexperience that’s not to be feared, but embraced. Once you feel comfortable swimming in a lake, the world willopen up to you and wherever you see water you willsee a new adventure waiting. Swift Nature Camp has over 1500 acres of water right out your cabin front door. At Swift Nature Camp we have a wonderful swimming area full of fun toys, not to mention Wally (the water trampoline) & Sally (the slide). “Free Swim” is one of the most anticipated times of the camp day, but “Instructional Swim” is there tohelp give you build the confidence for those free swims. You can even earn American Red Cross Swimming levels

It seems as if we are learning more that Summer Camp helps children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ’social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors. See how Swift Nature Camp can put Adventure back into your childs life.
